Canada: Foreign Affairs Minister calls on Iran to meet human rights obligations

29 January 2012

In a statement concerning various human rights abuses in Iran, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird noted the prison sentences given to “administrators of the Baha’i Institute for Higher Education…solely on the basis of their faith.” Minister Baird stated that “Iran’s current leaders regularly ignore their obligations under international law and have failed to meet internationally recognized norms of due process and transparency…We call on Iran to reverse its current course and meet its international human rights obligations and release prisoners…who have failed to receive fair and transparent legal treatment.”
