Working towards the Global Compact on Migration: What role for non-migration policies?

Brussels—15 November 2018

In the light of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration to be adopted in Marrakesh, Morocco this December, the Joint Research Center of the European Commission co-organized with the Brussels Office of the Baha’i International Community a meeting on how non-migration policies can be mobilized to support the implementation of the Compact.

Objective 2 of the Compact calls for a minimization of the adverse drivers and structural factors that compel people to leave their country of origin. Named Working towards Global Compact on Migration: What role for non-migration policies?" and hosted by the EU Policy Lab of the Joint Research Center, the meeting brought together policy makers, academics, and civil society actors to reflect on a fresh perspective and long-term vision to migration and displacement.

Among questions explored were: How can non-migration EU policies related to areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, and the environment positively shape the conditions towards minimizing adverse drivers of migration? How can policy coherence at the EU level be enhanced to contribute to alleviating the drivers of displacement, while embracing the benefits of human mobility more generally? How can we make sure that policies and initiatives developed in the areas of EU external engagement are coherent with those made in the field of development and migration?

Conclusions of the meeting can be found here in the EU Policy Lab blog.
