One Candle, a Thousand Lights: Amplifying Youth Leadership from the Grassroots to the Global Stage
In the hush of twilight, a single solemn candle is kindled by a hand both hopeful and animated with purpose. This flame—delicate, unwavering—may appear trivial and faint against the expanse of encroaching darkness. Yet a single flame can ignite a thousand more without relinquishing its own strength. In its glow, light multiplies—and in that proliferation lies the essence of transformative change.
Much like candles, youth working at the grassroots hold the potential of igniting broader transformation, however humble their efforts may seem. This year, at the ECOSOC Youth Forum, I witnessed their sparks converge, and their effect was truly empowering. What once flickered in isolation began to form a constellation of light—together, young changemakers illuminated global discourse with their intrepidity, innovation, and lived wisdom.
Voices once unheard could help shape policy. Actions once unseen could forge pathways toward a more inclusive and sustainable future.
This connection between local efforts and global objectives emerged as a central theme throughout this year’s Forum. Youth from diverse regions gathered to share the initiatives they had cultivated on the ground—demonstrating how community-based action can meaningfully contribute to the broader aspirations enshrined in the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Youth activists, young UN delegates, grassroots organizations, and NGOs shared compelling stories of how their local engagement not only uplifted their communities but also further kindled the flame of purpose they carry.
One essential side event—centered on the advancement of refugee youth leadership—featured a compelling array of youth speakers, many of whom were refugees themselves, or were United Nations Youth Delegates who had elevated local projects onto the global stage. Among them was a Danish Youth Delegate who addressed the audience with thoughtful conviction. She emphasized that her role as a delegate does not reside solely within global policy arenas but is deeply anchored in local action. She described her efforts to amplify the voices of Danish youth through initiatives she established within her own community—most notably, the recurring "youth hearings" she organizes. These hearings create safe, inclusive spaces where young people come together to engage in thoughtful dialogue and express their perspectives on the impact of regional and international policies, laws, and regulations.
Another compelling event—co-hosted by the Bahá’í International Community, the Permanent Mission of Ireland, and the African UN Youth Delegate Program (AUNYD)—further illuminated the profound impact of youth-driven local action. The session brought together numerous youth delegates from across the African continent, spanning countries from Ethiopia to Tanzania, who shared their lived experiences and the transformative work unfolding within their communities. One delegate spoke passionately about flourishing entrepreneurial initiatives led by youth, emphasizing how these grassroots enterprises have contributed meaningfully to national economic development. These ventures not only address immediate local needs but also lay the groundwork for long-term prosperity—ensuring that future generations may benefit from the innovations, opportunities, and sustainable growth emerging from youth-led businesses. The stories shared offered a powerful testament to how local ingenuity and community-rooted ambition can drive collective progress and national resilience.
Beyond the sessions, the Forum pulsed with stories—exchanged between vibrant, impassioned youth whose work radiates far beyond the borders of their communities and countries. Each story, each initiative, is a flame first kindled within a local community. Let the international community never overlook the enduring power of a single candle lit in one corner of the world—for one spark can give rise to endless illumination. The light of a youth’s candle shall not falter, so long as we continue to uplift, invest in, and believe in the strength of local initiative. For every spark lights the way to a brighter, more inclusive future.
